ABSTRACT

Abstract The present study examines the correlations between fifteen morphometric and ten meristic characters and total length (TL) of males, females, and combined sexes of Alepes vari (Cuvier, 1833) collected from Karachi fish harbor, West Wharf of Karachi Coast. Statistical analyses of linear regression relationships show mostly strong correlations (r0.70; p 0.05) between total length (TL) and most morphometric characters in males, females, and combined sexes, except the height of pectoral-fin (PFH), and pelvic-fin base length (PelFL); whereas, meristic characters were found to be constant and indicate weak or negative type correlations (r0.50; p>0.05) with total length (TL). Hence, according to our present results, there is a direct relationship between the total length of fish and all morphometric characters, which were found to be the best indicators of positive allometric pattern growth in fish. Moreover, analysis of the 2-sample t-test revealed (t-test; p>0.05) that no sexual dimorphism was reported in Alepes vari. Thus, our present study could be valuable in systematic classification, sexual dimorphism, and management of this species on the Karachi coast.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveBased on the traditional quality evaluation methods summarized in previous dynasties, this paper systematically contrasted cultivated Astragali Radix(CA) and wild-simulated Astragali Radix(WA) from the aspects of character, microstructure and chemical composition by modern technological means. MethodThe collected CA and WA were compared in characters and microscopic characteristics in cross section, and comparative analysis were performed on the contents of cellulose, extracts, carbohydrate, total flavonoids, total saponins, etc. Then ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometer(UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) and desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging(DESI-MSI) were used to comparatively analyze the secondary metabolites and their spatial distributions in the xylem and phloem of CA and WA. ResultIn terms of characters, the characters and sectional features of WA was consistent with the characteristics of high-quality Astragali Radix, while the CA was quite different from the traditional high-quality Astragali Radix. In terms of microscopy, the phellem layer of CA was thin, and the section fissures were mostly distributed through the cambium in a long strip shape without obvious growth ring characteristics. The cork layer of WA was thick, and the cracks in the section were distributed in the center of the xylem and the outer edge of the phloem in an irregular cavity shape. The cambium was tight without cracks, and had obvious characteristics of a growth ring. In terms of chemical composition, the contents of water-soluble extract, 80% ethanol extract and sucrose of CA was significantly higher than those of WA, while the contents of total saponins, lignin and hemicellulose were significantly lower than those of WA. And the contents of 100% ethanol extract, total polysaccharides and total flavonoids in both of them were generally similar, but slightly higher in WA. The contents of 2 kinds of monoacyl-substituted flavonoid glycosides in the xylem of WA was significantly higher than those of CA, while the contents of 2 kinds of flavonoid aglycones and one flavonoid glycoside were on the contrary. The contents of 7 saponins in phloem of WA were significantly higher than those of CA. ConclusionThere are significant differences between CA and WA in characters, microstructure and chemical components, in which CA has a fast growth rate and a short planting period, and the primary metabolites such as water-soluble extracts and sucrose are more enriched, which is the reason for its firm texture and sweetness being significantly higher than those of WA. However, the contents of lignin, hemicellulose and some secondary metabolites in WA are significantly higher than those in the CA, which are close to the traditional description of characters and quality. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested to strengthen the production of WA, improve the supply capacity of WA, and gradually upgrade the current standard. It is recommended to increase the contents of monoacyl-substituted flavonoid glycosides, total saponins and other indicators that can characterize different production methods, so as to guide the high-quality production of Astragali Radix.

ABSTRACT

The 'Criolla' potato (Solanum tuberosum) phureja group cultivated in the inter-Andean valleys of the high tropics, is commonly fertilized only with mineral nutrients in conventional production, without the use of soil test and use of organic fertilizers. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of organic chicken manure as a source of nutrients to increase yield and quality in 'Criolla' potatoes compared to conventional fertilization. Treatments evaluated were organic chicken manure, mineral nutrition based on soil tests, organic manure mixed with mineral nutrition, and conventional nutrition based on farmers' typical nutrition plans. In plant response conventional and mineral treatments mixed with organic matter were the best in leaf area and dry weight of shoot and tuber. Treatment with mineral nutrition mixed with organic manure (2 and 6 t) obtained the largest length of the main stems. The best yield response was obtained with conventional nutrition, while the major size was obtained with mineral and mineral combined with organic treatments. According to the results, the best response was obtained with the application of mineral nutrition in the combination of 6 t ha-1 organic manure.

ABSTRACT

With the objective of evaluating the phenotypic diversity of eight rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L.) from Vietnam, for their introduction in breeding programs and production in Cuba, supported by morphoagronomic characters and multivariate analysis techniques, this work was developed in Scientific and Technological Base Unit belonging to the National Agricultural Sciences Institute of Cuba. The Vietnamese cultivars were planted in the field together with the commercial cultivars INCA LP-5 and INCA LP-7, to be characterized agronomically with the use of 29 qualitative and 22 quantitative descriptors. The results showed that 16 qualitative characters were homogeneous for the eight cultivars from Vietnam and the two Cuban commercial cultivars, the association between various quantitative characters reaffirms the influence exerted by some components on yield, which are considered as markers for selection. Three cultivars of Vietnamese origin (GL301, LCG3-4 and DS1) cannot be used in Cuban rice production, due to their susceptibility to Tagosodes. All cultivars showed resistance to Rhizoctonia solani and Sarocladium oryzae and two (GL 301 and LTH 31) were susceptible to Pyricularia grisea. The OM6976, OM5451 and OM8087 cultivars reached high yield values, so they could be used as parents in breeding programs, as well as commercial cultivars.

ABSTRACT

The ascomycete fungal pathogen Ustilaginoidea virens (Cooke) Takahshi cause false smut in rice and considerable yield loss. In this study, we collected isolates of U. virens from the rice growing ecosystems of Karnataka and characterized for cultural, morphological and molecular characters. The isolates of the fungus on Potato Sucrose Agar media exhibited distinct colonies with colony growth ranging from 21.50 mm (Uv-20) to 70.00 mm (Uv-15). The colony colour appeared as whitish to yellowish with varied growth pattern from flat, raised flat to fluffy and raised fluffy colonies with sectoring in Uv-1, Uv-3, Uv-6 and Uv-9 isolates. The isolates of U. virens also showed variation in the morphology of spores, where the conidia were globose, irregularly round to elliptical and warty on the surface with spore radius ranging from 2.91 to 5.36 ?m. The scanning electron microscopy revealed hyaline globose to irregularly rounded ornamented chlamydospores with prominent spines. Besides cultural and morphological characters, molecular identification of false smut isolates was confirmed through ITS sequencing which showed 91 to 99 per cent identity with U. virens in NCBI-BLAST analysis. Dendrogram constructed using ITS sequence data broadly separated the isolates into two major clusters with divergence among clusters. This ITS (internal transcribed spacer) sequencing of isolates should help better understanding of the phylogenetic relationships among these isolates.

ABSTRACT

During the study period we recorded 29 species The fish production plays a significant role in the human economy. India has vast potential for development of inland fisheries. In the present study an attempt has been made to evaluate the physico-chemical characteristic features and fish fauna diversity of Kolleru Lake Eluru District. It proposed to enhancement of fish production in a sub urban perennial water body in Eluru district of Andhra Pradesh. The study was conducted during May 2021 to April 2022. The study revealed that different regions of the tank receive variable precipitation and hence meteorological factors governing the physico-chemical properties of the tank which in turn influence planktonic diversity and so that all the physico-chemical and biological factors have direct influence on the fish production. The present study, it observed that all the physico-chemical parameters are at nearly permissible limit at all the 3 identified stations. It is estimated that the fish fauna of Kolleru Lake consists of 29 species belonging to 12 families. Among the collections 10 species of Cypriniformes, order Siluriformes consists of 5 species, Channiformes consists of 05 species, Perciformes 03 species, and Osteoglossiformes 01 species. Therefore, it is suggested that the immediate measures may be to avoid further contamination of this Lake which has been started contaminated due to anthropological activities. Finally it may be concluded that the Kolleru Lake is rich in fish diversity and is still in a position to set a good example of conservation of native fish fauna by the sustainable management practices.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: The aerial part of Aloysia gratissima (Gil lies & Hook. ex Hook.) Tronc., "Usillo", is used as aromatic and medicinal. It is a shrub of up to 3 meters, distributed in North America, from the south of the USA to the north of Mexico, and in South America up to the 37th parallel. As in other native sp ecies, the demand is covered by harvesting in wild populations, which brings about the deterioration of the resource and lack of homogeneity of the harvested product. The variability was characterized in nine populations of A. gratissima var. gratissima fr om the northeast of San Luis, Argentina, based on morphological and phytochemical characters. It was found that the species in the region presents considerable heterogeneity. Diversity was detected in the chemical characteristics of the essential oils anal yzed and the prevalence of mono and sesquiterpenes was related to the olfactory identities identified. The main components were the sesquiterpene spatulenol and the monoterpene 1,8 cineole

ABSTRACT

To achieve larger production per unit area, sciences and farmers face a great defiance in improving cropping practices and elicitation new top yielding wheat varieties and also to establish the effects of these factors on the spike characters. Two years experiment were conducted to evaluate the effect of three nitrogen fertilizer levels (recommend rate 80 kg N/fed and 25% lower and higher than the recommended, i.e. 60 and 100 kg N/ fed, three seeding rates (40, 60 and 80 kg grains/fed) and there varieties (Giza-171, Gemmiza-12 and Shandawil-1), on spike characters of wheat at the Agricultural and experimental Research Station, Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt during 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 seasons. The experimental design was a split- split plot in randomized complete block arrangement with three replications. Nitrogen levels were allocated to the main plots, while the sub plots were assigned for seeding rates. Wheat varieties were distributed at random in the sub-sub plots. Each sub-sub plots area 4 m (2 x 2m). Generally, results indicated that significant effect on spike length and number of grains/ spike in both seasons and on weight of grains/ spike and 1000-grain weight in one season, where the tallest and heaviest spike as well as the heaviest 1000-grain weight were produced at the 100 kg N/fed in both seasons but the highest number of grains/spike was obtained at 80 kg N/fed in one season. It could be concluded that application nitrogen at the rate of 100 kg/fed proceed the favorable effect on spike characters under the environmental conditions of the experimental site and the similar conditions. Seeding rates caused a significant effect on all studied traits in one season, so the highest values were at 80 kg grains/fed, but this effect on 1000-grain weight was true in both seasons, where the highest value was at 60 kg grains/fed. Moreover, varieties were significantly differed in all spike character in both seasons except number and weight of grains/spike in one season where Giza-12 variety surpassed others. Al studied interactions had significant effect on all studied traits either in one or two season. Planting Giza-171 with 80 kg grains/fed and application of 100 kg N/fed was the pest treatment.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The objective of the study was to evaluate the genetic parameters of the biometric characteristics of the fruit and seeds of C. ebano. The investigation was carried out in Montería, Córdoba (Colombia); ten trees were selected and from each, ten fruits taken at random. Variance analysis and estimation of genetic parameters for nine traits were carried out: fresh fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, fruit thickness, number of seeds/fruit, weight of seeds by fruit, weight of one seed, volume of one seed and density of one seed. Statistical differences (p < 0.01) were detected between trees, for all traits except for width of the fruit and weight of a seed; denoting the existence of genetic variability between trees for fruit weight, fruit length, fruit thickness, number of seeds and density of a seed. The weight and length of the fruit presented the highest family heritability and narrow sense heritability (h2 Fam > 82 % and h2 E> 30 %). The expected genetic gain was greater than 10 % in five of the nine studied traits, and greater than 20 % for number of seeds and weight of seeds (27.31 and 27.87 %, respectively). The traits fruit weight and length could be transmitted to successive generations, with greater chance of success, by phenotypic selection of trees.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the characters and emergency treatment strategy of upper urinary tract stone obstruction complicated with urosepsis. Methods:Clinical data of 28 cases of urosepsis, caused by upper urinary tract stone obstruction and arranged for emergency admission in our hospital during January 2018 to December 2019, were retrospectively analyzed. There were 6 males and 22 females. The median age was 54(32-93)years old. All patients had fever with the temperature ranged from 38.5 to 41.0 ℃. The median course of disease was 3 (ranging 1-14) days. The systolic blood pressure ranged from 76 to 138 mmHg at admission. Hypotension group was defined as the systolic blood pressure<90 mmHg after admission. Normotensive group was defined as the systolic blood pressure≥90 mmHg. There were 12 cases in hypotension group, including 3 males and 9 females. The median age was 57 (ranging 32-93) years old. The stones located at left side in 7 cases and right side in 5 cases. The stones located at the upper ureter in 5 cases, middle ureter in 2 cases, lower ureter in 4 cases and renal calculi in one case. The median length of the stone was 10 (ranging 6-20) mm. Six cases suffered with diabetes mellitus. One case suffered with neuron system disease. 3 cases have history of recent extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy(ESWL). There were 16 cases in normotensive group, including 3 males and 13 females with the median age of 53 (ranging 33-76) years old. The stones located at left side in 5 cases, right side in 9 cases and bilateral in 2 cases. The stones located at the upper ureter in 10 cases, middle ureter in 4 cases, lower ureter in 2 cases. The length of the stone was 10 (ranging 8-14) mm. There were 3 cases with neurological diseases and 3 cases with recent ESWL history. There was significant difference between hypotension group and normotensive group in ration of diabetes mellitus ( P=0.024). Blood routine examination, C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin(PCT), blood and urine bacterial culture were performed in both groups. The patients were treated with empiric antibiotics after the evaluation based on the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA). Patients with hypotension were given blood volume expansion, and vasoactive drugs were added when the blood pressure was still low. After the blood pressure was stable, the collection system decompression was performed. The difference of infection indicators and therapeutic methods between the two groups was compared. Results:There was no significant difference in median WBC [16.34 (2.55-41.65) × 10 9/L vs. 13.97(6.23-26.65) × 10 9/L, P=0.577], median CRP [143.0(74.2-200.0) ng/ml vs.110.0 (22.7-200.0) ng/ml, P=0.771] between hypotension group and normotensive group. The difference of PCT [95.5 (26.5-200.0) ng / ml vs. 57.6 (1.0-200.0) ng / ml, P=0.040] and PLT [65.5(14.0-170.0)×10 9/L vs. 73.0(17.0-412.0)×10 9/L, P=0.030] between hypotension group and normotensive group was statistically significant. The median SOFA scores of hypotension group and normotensive group were significantly different [8.5(3.0-13.0) vs. 5.0(2.0-8.0), P=0.001]. Ureteral stent placement was performed in 23 cases, and nephrostomy was performed in 5 cases. There was no significant difference in surgical drainage between the two groups ( P=0.887). Eight patients in hypotension group were admitted to ICU. There was no significant difference in the duration of antibiotic use between hypotension group and normotensive group [8 (3-12) d vs. 5 (3-7) d, P=0.453]. Sepsis was cured in both groups after decompression, fluid resuscitation and antibiotic treatment. Conclusions:In severe cases of upper urinary tract stone obstruction complicated with urogenic sepsis, septic shock may occur. The condition is urgent, severe and dangerous. Patients with hypotension had higher PCT and SOFA scores, and lower PLT. It is very important to carry out the collection system decompression drainage in time, liquid resuscitation, early effective antibiotic use.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To study the differences in genetic relationship, shape, size, and flavonoid content between traditional and nontraditional medicinal varieties of Citri Reticulatae Semen produced in Sichuan province as well as their equivalence. Method:Six batches of traditional medicinal Citri Reticulatae Semen (Citrus reticulata 'Dahongpao') and 23 batches of nontraditional medicinal varieties were collected, and their genetic relationship was explored using sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) markers. Following the observation of their shapes and sizes under a stereomicroscope, the contents of naringin, hesperidin, and neohesperidin were measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). SIMCA 14.1 software was used for cluster analysis of their shapes, sizes, and flavonoid contents, thus figuring out the similarities between the traditional and nontraditional medicinal varieties in character, size, and chemical components. Result:SRAP markers-based genetic relationship analysis effectively distinguished different Citri Reticulatae Semen varieties from each other. Some samples collected from the same or adjacent places exhibited a close genetic relationship and they shared high similarities in shape, size, and flavonoid content. However, the traditional medicinal Citri Reticulatae Semen was still quite different from most nontraditional medicinal varieties. Conclusion:The analysis of differences in genetic materials, appearance, character, and active ingredient content between the traditional and nontraditional medicinal varieties revealed that the equivalence of C. reticulata 'Ponkan' samples from some regions with the traditional medicinal variety was the largest, enabling them to be considered as the emerging medicinal variety.

ABSTRACT

Two new species from the upper rio Tocantins basin are described in Knodus based on the traditional definition of the genus. The new species are distinguished from other congeners by meristic and morphometric characters, such as the number of cusps in the premaxillary and dentary teeth, the number of scale series between dorsal-fin origin and lateral line, the orbital diameter and the body depth. With the two new species, the number of endemic species in the upper rio Tocantins basin upstream of the mouth of the rio Paranã, rises to 53 (89 to the confluence with rio Araguaia). The existence of a meristic character that changes through ontogeny (allomery), viz. the number of scale series between dorsal-fin origin and lateral line, was detected in some species of Knodus through a regression analysis. Additionally, this paper describes an unambiguous, more informative and precise new method for counting vertebrae, which will enhance the efficacy of this trait in species comparisons.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Hylaeamys megacephalus (G. Fisher, 1814) presents great genetic diversity and wide geographical distribution, and occurs in both the Amazon and Cerrado biomes. Because of its generalist aspect, this species tolerates different eating habits and habitats. It occurs in flooded and dry areas and is predominantly terrestrial, which allows greater gene flow between populations even over long distances. Studies that seek a better understanding of morphological variations resulting from differences imposed by the environment throughout this species' distribution are still lacking. This study aimed to analyze the differences between H. megacephalus populations based on craniometry, investigating whether the environment has an influence on morphology. We analyzed a total of 142 specimens from three scientific mammal collections: National Museum, "Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro" (MN-UFRJ); "Laboratório de Biologia e Parasitologia de Mamíferos Reservatórios Silvestres", "Instituto Oswaldo Cruz", "Fundação Oswaldo Cruz"(LBCE-Fiocruz); and "Laboratório de Biodiversidade", "Universidade Federal de Goiás", "Regional Jataí" (LZE-UFG), and took 20 craniometric measurements. Craniometry was explored using unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA), canonical variate analysis, and principal component analysis (PCA). The results led us to conclude that there are three craniometric groups of H. megacephalus with a tendency to differentiate as a result of geographical influences.(AU)
